French Roulette: Rules and Payouts

The rules of French Roulette are quite simple. Its wheel consists of 37 numbered squares with 3 possible colors. From 1 to 36, the squares can be red or black, while 0 is green.

The croupier spins a small ball over the wheel. You can bet on an individual number that you think the ball will land on the next spin or on a group of numbers. If you bet on a group/groups of numbers, the chance of winning increases, but the reward will be smaller.

The above rules apply to most roulette variations, so let’s look at the ones specific to French roulette.

Rules

  • Surrender
  • Le Partage
  • En Prison

These special rules reduce the casino’s house edge, so you will ultimately lose fewer funds.

The Surrender Rule

The concept of this rule is based on the term balanced odds bet. This type of bet includes betting options offering equal odds of winning and losing. For example, odd/even, black/red, etc. If you make such a bet and the ball lands on 0 or 00, you will receive half of your money back.

“Le Partage”

The concept of this rule is basically the same as the “Surrender Rule”, but applies only to 0.

En Prison

This rule is more complicated compared to “Le Partage”. When applied, you don’t get half of your money back. When the ball lands on 0, the balanced odd bet remains on the table. The croupier marks the bet, stating that it is “in prison”. On the next spin, if your previous “in prison” bet wins, you get your original betting amount. If not, you lose.

Strategies

We’ve gone through the rules of French roulette, so let us take a look at some strategies. Note that they are not guaranteed to win by any means.

One method that you can utilize is instead of placing inside bets, make outside ones. The potential winnings will be lower, but the chance of winning increases in the long run.

Martingale

Going through roulette strategies, we cannot miss the Martingale method. It is a simple strategy of doubling your outside bet after losing the current one. If you win, you reset your bet to the original value you have considered.

Paroli

If you are a beginner, the Martingale strategy could be quite risky for you. A more appropriate strategy for newbies is the Paroli method. It is basically a reversed version of the Martingale one. You double your bet as long as you win. The more you win, the more you risk. Thus, we suggest having a base bet of 1% – 3% of your bank. Also, you must have a maximum number of winning rounds before collecting your winnings. The idea here is that raising your winning bets will compensate for your previous losses. When you lose, you start from your base bet.
